Tola WeweIn collaboration with other major international museums and galleries world-over, the African Artists Foundation will sponsor an annual arts competition for teenage artists. The resulting juried exhibit will be shown in both Nigeria and at the partner museum or gallery abroad and feature the work of young artists from both the host country and the African Artists Foundation competition.

Adolphus Opara This international competition and exhibit will provide young African artists with an international audience for their work as well as the opportunity to broaden their arts exposure and enhance their artistic education. Under this partnership with international galleries and museums, AAF will organize a student exchange program with the host country, providing teen artists from both countries the chance to meet and work with young artists worldwide and create an international network of emerging talent.

Nigerian Painting Competition
“Spanish artists, Nigerian style”
Rules and Regulations 
 

  1. The competition is organized in Abuja by the Embassy of Spain to Nigeria, with the sponsorship of several Spanish companies present in Nigeria and with the collaboration of the Transcorp-Hilton hotel.
  1. The topic is “Spanish artists, Nigerian styles”. The artists will face the challenge of interpreting one Spanish famous painting among the following three master pieces proposed:

a) Las Meninas     VELÁZQUEZ
b) El salto de la Garrocha    GOYA
c) Familia de acróbatas con mono   PICASSO 

  1. Any technique is allowed. The Embassy of Spain will provide each artist a white canvas. The artists will bring their own painting materials.
  1. All the artists wishing to participate must send a scanned copy of a draft of their works based on one of the three mater pieces mentioned above to both following e-mail addresses: embespng@mail.mae.es and eva.barta@mae.es before September 20th. No e-mails will be accepted after this deadline.

The draft will ONLY be used for the selection of the artists. On the day of the competition, the artists will not be allowed to use it; they will start from a white canvas.
A selection of the artists participating at the competition will be made, at the selection’s panel sole discretion. 
Artists selected to participate will be informed by the organizers between the 24th and the 25th of September.  

  1. The artists selected to participate will present 1 of their works (not related with the work being presented for the competition) to be exhibited on the 9th and 10th at the Transcorp-Hilton, Abuja. The works must be forwarded to:

Between the 26th and the 28th of September.

Every painting entered must be accompanied by an envelope containing the author’s details (name, surname, telephone number, passport number and a short CV, not longer than 1 page) and the painting’s technical information (title, used technique, dimensions). 

  1. The selected artists must be at the Transcorp-Hilton Abuja on the 10th of October at 9h30am. The artists will have from 10h30am to 17h30pm to work on the reproduction.
  1. The selection panel will be chaired by H.E. Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, Honourable Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation; H.E. Mr. Ángel Losada Fernández, Ambassador of Spain; Dr. Mrs. Peju Layiwola, artist and lecturer at the Faculty of Arts in Lagos; Mr. J.O. Musa, Director of the National Gallery of Art and Mr. Dudu Emmanuel, artist and winner of the last painting competition. The panel’s decision is final.
  1. The winner and the consolation prizes will be informed on the 10th of October and awarded at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja on the same day. There will be a reception followed by a cocktail.
  1. First prize will be a four days full paid trip to Madrid to visit ARCO (13-18 February 2008), one of the most important exhibitions on contemporary art all over the world.
  1. The consolation prizes will be two painting material batches.
  1. The awarded paintings will remain the property of the Embassy of Spain and can be exhibited anywhere, anytime, in order to make know the talent and creativity of Nigerian painters.
  1. By the fact of submitting the artworks for display artists warrant that they are sole owners of copyright in their work, and that no other person has any rights in them. Artists will be held responsible vis-à-vis the organizers for any harm, damage or loss arising out of a claim by a third party for breach of copyright.
  1. The Embassy of Spain will not be responsible for any damage or loss of the paintings sent to Abuja.
