The demands for returning iconic cultural artefacts to African states, prominently advocated during the 1970s, notably through FESTAC cultural initiatives, are now experiencing an acceleration and democratization. Economists Felwine Sarr and historian Bénédicte Savoy stress the urgent need for Africa’s youth to access the knowledge embodied in these artefacts, emphasizing a dialogue between cultures rather than individual state ownership.
Partnering with the Nigerian National Council of Museums and Monuments (NCMM) to receive vital support for research trips focusing on documenting museums across Nigeria, including Ife Museum, Benin Museum, Ibadan Museum, Owo Museum, Lagos Museum, and Abeokuta Museum. This collaboration aims to initiate local discussions on restitution, engaging feedback and involvement from over sixty museums in Nigeria and participants ranging from schoolchildren to international online audiences.
